Iced coffee has been quite popular in Japan for a long time. Japanese cafes are known for serving iced coffee that comes in a tall glass, along with a pitcher of liquid sugar. Japanese coffee, also known as the “Aisu Kohi'', is made with a brewing method that results in a drink that is complex in terms of flavor. Japanese coffee lies somewhere between conventional iced coffee and cold brew.
If you want to make Japanese iced coffee at the comfort of your home, then follow the instructions mentioned below!
What You Will Need:
To make the coffee, you will need a few tools that could help you brew that perfect cup. All of these tools must be readily available in your home. If not, you can easily get them online or from your nearest stores. You will be needing:
- A coffee scale (if you do not have a coffee scale, you can use a measuring cup instead)
- A pour-over coffee maker or a carafe
- Coffee filter
- Kettle for hot water
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Putting Ice Into your Jar or Carafe
First thing that you need to do is to put your required amount of ice in your carafe. If you do not have a carafe, you can use a mason jar as well. Mason jars can be easily found in any store. The great thing about mason jars is that they can be used to store leftover coffee as well, since they come with a lid.
- Measuring The Coffee
Next, you need to measure out the coffee that you would need. For this recipe, measure out one ounce of coffee. If you do not have a coffee scale, then use a measuring cup and take out ¼ cup of coffee.
Since Japanese Iced Coffee is supposed to have a complex taste, we recommend using a dark roast to get that flavor accurately.
- Placing The Filter
After measuring the coffee, take your mason jar or carafe and set up the filter. Make sure that the filter fits the top of the jar properly. Add coffee on top of the filter.
- Bringing The Water to a Boil
You can use a pan or a kettle for this step. Fill your pan or kettle with some water and bring it to a boil. Note that it is very crucial for the water to reach its boiling point before you take off the heat.
After the water has been boiled, take it to your prepared jar or carafe. Using slow and steady hands, start pouring the water over the coffee and the filler. Make sure that you pour enough water that allows the coffee grounds to puff out. This process is known as “blooming”. Repeat the process until coffee has been completely drained into the jar.
- Removing the Filter
Now you need to remove the filter. Make sure that you dispose of the coffee grounds properly. You can even recycle the coffee grounds and make use of them again.
- Enjoy Your Cup of Japanese Iced Coffee
Lastly, add in a bit more ice before you enjoy this delicious cup of Japanese iced coffee. You can even add sugar or milk to the coffee according to your preference.
